The widower of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, Asif Ali Zardari, has won the election to become the new President of Pakistan. He received 481 votes out of 702 votes in a sweeping victory over the opposition. Pervez Musharraf resigned rather than risk being impeached. Mr. Zardari is the leader of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). He was strongly opposed by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s PML-N party.
